American judo competitor Nicholas Delpopolo is disqualified from the Olympics after testing positive for a prohibited substance.
In a statement, the International Olympic Committee said: "(Mr Delpopolo) was requested on 30 July 2012, in London, at approximately 3:15 pm, immediately following the completion of his participation in the above-mentioned event, to provide a urine sample for a doping control.
"The analytical report of the laboratory analysis ...indicated the presence of 11-nor-delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid" (the main active compound of the product from cannabis).
Mr Delpopolo's website states the 22-year-old US champion is ranked sixteen in the world and took gold at the Venezuela World Cup and the El Salvador World Cup:
Delpopolo finished 2010 as the top judo medal winner in the world "Delpopolo currently trains and competes both in the United States and abroad as he continues his quest to not only be the best in the nation, but to be the best in the world.
"Each victory brings him one step closer to qualifying for the 2012 Olympics and achieving his dream of becoming the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in Judo."
