A five-year-old British girl and her grandfather have drowned on a Portuguese beach.
The youngster was with her two grandparents on Salgado Beach, in Nazare, about 80 miles north of Lisbon, when the tragedy happened.
They "were likely trapped by the waves," said Antonio Jose de Albuquerque, the local harbour master.
He said nearby fishermen saw the three struggling in the water and helped pull them on to the beach, before calling for help.
"When help arrived, they were able to save the grandmother, but the grandfather was already dead," he added.
"The first-aid workers tried in vain to revive the girl for nearly an hour."
The grandmother was taken to hospital and was said to be out of danger.
Eight people have now drowned off Portuguese beaches this summer.
